Celebrating the spirit of citizenship and activism explored in the books D is for Democracy; Everyone Counts and The Happy Prince, Sleeping Bear Press invites teachers and their students to participate in the "What's a Citizen to Do?" Classroom Community Action Contest.

What Is It?

An online contest that gives elementary and middle school classrooms a chance to demonstrate their understanding of good citizenship and then put their ideas to work in a project to benefit their local communities.

Using concepts and information found in the books D is for Democracy; Everyone Counts and The Happy Prince, classrooms must prepare and submit a proposal outlining a community project they would like to implement.

Who May Participate?

The contest is restricted to classes in grades 3-8. Teachers representing a participating class may submit one project proposal to represent each class.

Prizes

All entries will be entered into a raffle to win a school visit by artist Victor Juhasz or author Elissa Grodin.

When?

The project submission portion of the contest begins Oct. 1, 2008 and ends Nov. 30, 2008.
